» Focus On Construction

It looks like being an extremely busy time for those working in the construction industry.

In the Hull area there are several large exciting projects planned such as:-

- the Preston Road Regeneration Programme

- the Hedon Road dual carriage way

- a new maternity hospital near the Hull Royal Infirmary

- a 100 bed cancer unit to be built at Castle Hill Hospital

- the new Super Stadium to be built near West Park

- the Deep Marine Complex

- the regeneration of Ferensway and the Hull Bus Station

- the building of the Endeavour School on Beverley Road

So it would appear to be a very good time for those interested in training or working in this field.

Hull Local Labour Initiative (Hull LLI) was created so that such projects will employ a large percentage of local people.

» RB 6 West Hull Economic Regeneration

Hull City Council is currently working on a SRB 6 bid to regenerate a large area of West Hull. This area is in the bottom 10% nationally on the social and economic indicator deprivation scales.

One of the major flagship schemes seen as a catalyst to improve the quality of life for those living in this deprived area is the Sports Community Park initiative. This initiative will comprise of a number of major developments including the building of a 5,000 seat Arena to be used for various sports such as badminton, indoor tennis and various martial arts codes as well as concerts and trade fairs. A large range of other community facilities will be provided including 2 floodlit all weather pitches and a BMX track.

The centrepiece development will be an architect designed modern stadium seating 25,000. This stadium will also include community facilities and be linked into the other Community Sports facilities to allow the whole complex to be a 7-day venue.

The Local Labour Initiative will ensure that the majority of the employment opportunities available while the whole of the development is built will be for those living in the area. The number of jobs created within the building industry is calculated to be in the hundreds and many should last for up to 2 years.

Once the complex is completed, many other employment opportunities will be available to the local community. These will include catering, administration, retail, marketing and the sports and leisure industry. The target date for completion is Autumn 2002 at a total cost of £43.5 million pounds.
