The Health & Safety (Young Persons) Regulations came into force in March 1997. TheGovernment aims to develop a sensible, pragmatic approach to compliance.

Employers are now required to :
Assess risks to young people under 18 years old before they start work
Address specific factors in the risk assessment
Take into account their inexperience, lack of awareness of existing or potential risks and immaturity.
Provide information to parents (or guardians) of children about risks, and determine whether the young person should be prohibited from certain duties



The new Regulations apply to young people on work experience placements who are regarded as employees for the purpose of health and safety.
